Welcome!
What is this?
Beginnings are hard
We’re starting this Substack with a game of connections so I can play God like Wyna Liu from the NYT
Rock Nose Touch On
Ass Enough Boiled Bring
Times Stone Stoned Work
Burn Hang Bank Cut
The first category is Hard…. hahahahahaha
1. Why this, why now
Reccently I read Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention by Johann Hari and it scared the absolute shit out of me. I was always weary (and still victim to) the short media forms such as TikTok or Instagram Reels but, I thought being aware was enough. Instead, Hari goes into detail about how some experts and inventors of the social internet as we know it either, regret their invention (see the infinite scroll), or see a future where some of us are conscious of reality as we know it and some of us are unknowingly slaves to algorithms that make the most money when your attention is zapped. I would recommend reading the book yourself (and skip the intro it really does the book an injustice) to get the full picture as well as cited sources. This is my substack and I will cite nothing (probably) believe it or not this is not for you.
This really gets me to the main reason I made this substack. I have felt more frustrated lately with the design of social media and feeling like there are multiple versions of me that aren’t *really* representative of me. So in short ~this~ space has been made to:
a) fix my focus and spend time writing and being present with my thoughts
b) help bridge that two-faced feeling of social media (I mean what’s more me than a diary aka substack)
c) creative a space to be disciplined with myself because there is an audience. (I am nothing without the accountability brought on by the fear of public embarrassment)
2. What do YOU get out of this??
If this was going to make me money or whatever I would try and sell you a reason to follow, but I am not because I just want to be here more than anything else. Feel free to take the prompts that I write at or respond if you feel so inclined. Of course, I would love a community, but as I write this to the empty subscriber list as it stands now I am my community. What kind of space will this be? (substack asks) I don’t know I have never done this before.
3. Substack says I should use an image
So enjoy this subpar rendering of my Connections board as I wrote it up there.
4. So that’s it! Unless you want more..
In which case you can get this emailed to you anytime I have something to say:
If you want to play along with my connections don’t scroll much further than this
Thanks for making it this far.
Until next time!
Best,
Makenna
